Will large valve 283 heads work with a standard bore 350 block without doing major modifications? what's a good cam setup for good torque/horsepower if this combo will work together? thanks Cliff 63 Impala SS |

Small valves and ports=small horsepower. Good cam design will build pressure and give you pretty good torque which is what matter on the street. |

| Clifton, Large valve 283 heads will work with no modifications on your 350 block. Find the casting number and email us back. If you have the 1.94/1.50 valves in a 283 head with casting number 3782461X you have a cast iron set of 1961-1963 283 heads good for more than 300 horsepower with the correct cam and matching valve springs. These 3782461X heads were used on the 1962-1963 327 engines with horsepower ratings of 300, 340 and 360 and the same heads were used on the 1960-1961 283. The camshaft was different in every application. Different casting numbers were used for different years. All heads did not have the same ports, or same valves or same size combustion chambers. Find your cylinder head casting number so we can identify the year and other specifics to help guide you to a camshaft selection. The casting number is located on the top side of the heads, visible when you pull off the valve covers. This particular casting number had good flowing ports when it was new and can easily be converted to 2.02 /1.60 valves with hardened seats. Match these heads with a good aftermarket intake manifold- call Edelbrock at 1 800 FUN TEAM, matching camshaft, valve springs, lifters, carburetor and exhaust system and it will make a good daily driver with good torque at 300 plus horsepower. Had a friend with this exact 350 package listed above, with the 3782461X cast iron heads upgraded with the 2.02/1.60 valves and hardened seats, a little bit of home porting on the heads, with forged flat top pistons set at zero deck, stock cast crank, stock 5.7" 350 rods, stock block, good balancing on the rotating assembly, Edelbrock Victor Junior single plane intake manifold, Holley 650 double pumper, dual feed, mechanical secondaries carburetor, Holley mechanical fuel pump, 1 5/8" Hooker headers in a 3200 pound car, with 4.11 rear gears, TH400 transmission and a street convertor run deep into the 11 second quarter mile range with the help of a 150 shot of nitrous over 20 years ago and he drove it on the street. The key is to make sure every part works together as a system. We need to know the casting number on your heads to identify them to make a good camshaft recommendation. The valve size, combustion chamber size and port size of your heads will determine which camshaft is suited to your 350 combination. |
