1963 283 cu in engines Jun. 30, 2009 5:22 pm

Hello. I am in the process of overhauling my 1963 impala, with a 283 engine. To my surprise, when I unassembled the cylinder heads, i noticed that some of the holes in the head were covered by the gasket. The hydraulic tests on the heads were faulty, so I started looking for new ones. Finally I got 2 new heads, but these heads have more refrigerating holes than the previous. According to the mechanic, mine is a "super" 283, a later model that had more refrigerating current in order to avoid overheating. Is that possible? Thanks.

Chevrolet 400 cubic inch small block engines have extra holes drilled on the deck side of the cylinder head to match the 400 block for additional cooling because the 400 block has siamiesed cylinder walls. Do NOT use the 400 cylinder heads on your 283 or they will leak water. Never heard of a Super 283?
