Check engine light only turns on when you have an engine related problem. You will need to do a diagnostic check to find the problem and fix it. Then you will need to clear the codes, disconnect the positive battery cable for 3 minutes and then reconnect it to turn the service engine soon light off after you fix the problem.

Not the check engine light but the service engine soon light. The check engine light is not the problem.Would you need to disconnect the battery to stop this one from coming on?

JOEL did you ever stop to think that you might have a problem that may need to looked at ? A piece of tape is not the answer. And yes you can kil them . Take it and have it looked at. This is not the day of the shade tree garage.

Check engine light and/or Service engine soon light turns on when there is a problem with your engine or engine related sensors. The computer will turn the light on and give a code. Code will tell you what is wrong. Codes can be read by cycling the ignition key on your 1993 S-10 and grounding two wires on the Assembly Line Disconnect Link commonly referred to the ALDL which is simply a little access plug located under the dash by the ash tray. Different year, make and model GM's have different ALDL plugs and plug lettering. Usually each plug is lettered A-G. Sometimes more plugs and letters are used.

For codes and how to read them, how to cycle your ignition key to get the codes and which two ALDL plugs to ground contact your local auto parts store, tell them your year, make and model. They will show you how to get the code, what it means and which part or parts to replace and how to turn the light off once the faulty part is removed and replaced.
